Angélus stands in a league of its own on the Right Bank. The 2016 vintage is a complete outlier—hailed as one of the finest of the decade—harvested during the era when the estate held its peak Premier Grand Cru Classé A status.

• The Aromatic Backbone: The blend is a remarkable 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Franc. That uniquely high percentage of Cabernet Franc drives a brilliant aromatic profile of violets, graphite, and dried herbs, rounded out by the lush plum fruit of the Merlot.

• The “Alphabetical” Move: A fun piece of wine trivia—the estate was historically called L’Angélus. The family strategically dropped the “L” entirely so the winery would appear first alphabetically in listings and catalogs. Pure savvy.

You might know Cos d’Estournel for its majestic pagodas and carved wooden doors, a legacy of the “Maharajah of Saint-Estèphe,” Louis-Gaspard d’Estournel. While the estate is a Left Bank titan famous for its reds, they produce what is arguably the best dry white wine in all of Bordeaux.

• The Terroir: Located in Saint-Estèphe, Cos d’Estournel neighbors Chateau Lafite, separated only by a small stream.

• The Rarity: They produce fewer than 1,000 cases of the Grand Vin Blanc annually, making it an incredibly difficult allocation to secure.

• The Architecture: The estate is famous for its Eastern-inspired design, featuring stone elephants and pagodas that stand out against the classic French skyline.

The Science: 2022 “Posture” & Precision

The 2022 vintage was defined by a brutal, hot summer, but the wine remains incredibly fresh. We went deep into the “nerdy” details of how they pulled it off.

• The Rain that Saved the Vines: Bordeaux saw nearly 100mm of rain in June 2022. Thanks to the deep roots of the old vines, the plants were able to store that water and pull from it during the heatwaves.

• The Blend: A precision mix of 74% Sauvignon Blanc (for crisp gooseberry and citrus aromatics) and 26% Sémillon (which adds a rich, oily “meaty” mouthfeel).

• No Malolactic Fermentation: To maintain that racy, electric acidity, the winemaker intentionally blocked “Malo.” This keeps the wine fresh and prevents the creamy, buttery notes often found in Chardonnay.

• The Posture: Fermented in used oak, the wine gains structure and “posture” without taking on heavy vanilla or baking spice flavors.

The Icon: Michele Chiarlo 2016 Barolo Cerequio Riserva

We’ve been spending a lot of time in France lately, so it felt right to head back to Italy for the “King of Reds”.

• The “Tar and Roses” Profile: Barolo is famous for high tannins and high acidity, with critics often describing its unique aromatics as tar and roses.

• The Vineyard: Cerequio is a tiny “amphitheater” of vines sheltered from the wind. This specific site is smaller than a football field, featuring old vines planted over 50 years ago.

• The “Wise” Vines: Rodolfo noted that old vines are often called “wise” because they naturally reach a balance, producing less fruit but significantly higher complexity.

  

The Legend of the Sacrilegious Priest

I shared a favorite story about Michele Chiarlo from the ‘80s. When he first started leasing the Cerequio vines, he began “green harvesting”—manually cutting fruit off the vines to increase the concentration of the remaining bunches.

The locals were so outraged by the perceived waste that they sent a local priest to tell him to stop the “sacrilege”. He ignored them, kept his yields low, and today, his wines are some of the most sought-after in the world.

The Drop: A Generation-Defining Vintage 🚨

Tomorrow’s drop is a 10-year-old library release from the 2016 vintage, which is arguably the best Piedmont has seen in an entire generation.

• The Details: Only produced in exceptional years, this Riserva was aged for at least 62 months, including three years in large casks and two in the bottle.

• The Offer: We are releasing three-bottle lots that are coming in significantly under market value.

Château Troplong Mondot 2016, Saint-Émilion Premier Grand Cru Classé.

This one has a few things going for it.

First, it’s a library release. That means the winery held back part of the vintage and released it later, once the wine had time to evolve. It’s not something you see often, and it says a lot about how the estate views the wine.

Second, the vintage.

2016 in Bordeaux is widely considered outstanding. Balanced, structured, and built to age, but already showing beautifully.

And then there’s the estate itself.

Troplong Mondot sits on one of the highest points in Saint-Émilion, with a vineyard that combines elevation, slope, and careful vineyard work. The result is a wine that brings together power and control, richness and structure.

During the livestream, we also talked about what makes the Right Bank so distinctive.

More Merlot in the blend.
A softer, more generous texture.
But still plenty of depth and aging potential.

A proper virtual happy hour, Rodolfo actually opening a bottle for once, and a deep dive into a wine that’s been getting a lot of attention lately: Château Giscours 2022.

We spent the session unpacking why this wine stood out.

First, the basics. Giscours is a Third Growth from Margaux, part of the historic 1855 Bordeaux classification (explanation video coming soon, stay tuned 👀). However, classification doesn’t always tell the full story today. Some estates consistently outperform their rank, and Giscours is one of them.

Rodolfo described it perfectly when he tasted it live: polished, balanced, with fine tannins and a long finish. A wine that already shows beautifully, but will evolve over time.

We also touched on what makes Margaux unique. Think elegance, structure, and what I like to call “power in cashmere.” It’s a style that stands apart within Bordeaux.

And then there’s the bigger picture.

When a wine gets this kind of recognition, things move fast. Collectors step in, availability tightens, and the secondary market follows. It’s a pattern we’ve seen many times.

This week’s drop features Vincent Dancer Meursault Perrières Premier Cru 2024, a Chardonnay from one of Burgundy’s most admired vineyards and from one of the most exciting families in the region right now.

During the livestream, Rodolfo and I talked about why the Dancer family has become such a big deal in Burgundy. Vincent built the domaine’s reputation around incredibly pure, terroir-driven wines. Now his son Théo Dancer, still in his twenties, is carrying the torch and is already considered one of the rising stars of Burgundy’s new generation.

Think of the names shaping Burgundy’s “new wave”: Charles Lachaux, Pierre Girardin… and Théo Dancer right alongside them.

We also talked about why white Burgundy at this level can be a mind-blowing experience. Chardonnay grows all over the world, but in Burgundy it’s all about place. Small vineyard plots, obsessive attention to terroir, and a style built around balance, acidity, and what wine people love to call “tension.”

When everything comes together: fruit, acidity, minerality, and length, the wine feels like a full orchestra playing in harmony. And that’s exactly what wines from Meursault Perrières are famous for.

Another reason this drop is special? Scarcity.

The parcel behind this wine is tiny, and production is extremely limited. When bottles like this hit the market, they tend to move quickly.
