First, the style: This is a Right Bank wine, with a blend leaning heavily on Cabernet Franc & Merlot, which is less common in Saint-Émilion and gives the wine its structure and complexity.

Second, the philosophy: Ausone made the bold decision to step away from the Saint-Émilion classification in recent years. A move that raised questions at the time, but one that hasn’t changed how collectors view the estate.

Reputation, in this case, speaks for itself.

A bit of banter, a virtual happy hour, and a deep dive into this week’s drop:
Château Troplong Mondot 2016, Saint-Émilion Premier Grand Cru Classé.

This one has a few things going for it.

First, it’s a library release. That means the winery held back part of the vintage and released it later, once the wine had time to evolve. It’s not something you see often, and it says a lot about how the estate views the wine.

Second, the vintage.

2016 in Bordeaux is widely considered outstanding. Balanced, structured, and built to age, but already showing beautifully.

And then there’s the estate itself.

Troplong Mondot sits on one of the highest points in Saint-Émilion, with a vineyard that combines elevation, slope, and careful vineyard work. The result is a wine that brings together power and control, richness and structure.

During the livestream, we also talked about what makes the Right Bank so distinctive.

More Merlot in the blend.
A softer, more generous texture.
But still plenty of depth and aging potential.

And one of the key signals we always look for: critical consensus.

This wine saw strong scores across multiple critics, which is often where things get interesting. When different palates converge, it usually means the wine is worth paying attention to.

A proper virtual happy hour, Rodolfo actually opening a bottle for once, and a deep dive into a wine that’s been getting a lot of attention lately: Château Giscours 2022.

We spent the session unpacking why this wine stood out.

First, the basics. Giscours is a Third Growth from Margaux, part of the historic 1855 Bordeaux classification (explanation video coming soon, stay tuned 👀). However, classification doesn’t always tell the full story today. Some estates consistently outperform their rank, and Giscours is one of them.

Rodolfo described it perfectly when he tasted it live: polished, balanced, with fine tannins and a long finish. A wine that already shows beautifully, but will evolve over time.

We also touched on what makes Margaux unique. Think elegance, structure, and what I like to call “power in cashmere.” It’s a style that stands apart within Bordeaux.

And then there’s the bigger picture.

When a wine gets this kind of recognition, things move fast. Collectors step in, availability tightens, and the secondary market follows. It’s a pattern we’ve seen many times.

This week’s drop features Vincent Dancer Meursault Perrières Premier Cru 2024, a Chardonnay from one of Burgundy’s most admired vineyards and from one of the most exciting families in the region right now.

During the livestream, Rodolfo and I talked about why the Dancer family has become such a big deal in Burgundy. Vincent built the domaine’s reputation around incredibly pure, terroir-driven wines. Now his son Théo Dancer, still in his twenties, is carrying the torch and is already considered one of the rising stars of Burgundy’s new generation.

Think of the names shaping Burgundy’s “new wave”: Charles Lachaux, Pierre Girardin… and Théo Dancer right alongside them.

We also talked about why white Burgundy at this level can be a mind-blowing experience. Chardonnay grows all over the world, but in Burgundy it’s all about place. Small vineyard plots, obsessive attention to terroir, and a style built around balance, acidity, and what wine people love to call “tension.”

When everything comes together: fruit, acidity, minerality, and length, the wine feels like a full orchestra playing in harmony. And that’s exactly what wines from Meursault Perrières are famous for.

Another reason this drop is special? Scarcity.

The parcel behind this wine is tiny, and production is extremely limited. When bottles like this hit the market, they tend to move quickly.

And as always, provenance matters. Burgundy’s secondary market can be a bit of a minefield, which is exactly why every bottle released through dVIN comes with verified sourcing and full chain-of-custody from vineyard to cellar, through our dVIN Protocol.

🍇 The Wine Drop: Château Palmer 2014, XIX Century

We started with the details of today’s members-only wine drop:
Château Palmer 2014, XIX Century.

This cuvée looks back to the 19th century, when Bordeaux commonly blended a small portion of Hermitage Syrah into Médoc wines. Château Palmer revives this tradition only in select vintages, producing the wine in very small quantities.

It’s a bottle that keeps Palmer’s depth and aromatic lift, while showing a softer, more velvety texture than you’d expect at this stage. Unconventional, but unmistakably Palmer.

🎨 The Digital Cork Artwork: Translating Wine into Form

A highlight of the session was welcoming Markus Gladitsch - sommelier, creative consultant, and the artist behind the digital cork artwork created specifically for this Palmer release.

Markus shared how he approaches wine not just through tasting notes, but through visual language and narrative structure. His goal isn’t to explain the wine, but to translate its tension, balance, and character into something you can see and feel.

The digital cork artwork reflects exactly that: a meeting point between Bordeaux and the Northern Rhône, tradition and reinterpretation, structure and softness.

This Thursday, January 29 at 1pm ET, we’re releasing a members-only allocation of Château Palmer 2014, XIX Century. This cuvée looks back to a time when Bordeaux routinely included a touch of Hermitage Syrah, a practice common in the 19th century and rarely revisited today (read more about this cuvée here: https://starwinelist.com/wine-story/biting-into-a-cloud-the-chateau-palmer-historical-xixth-century-wine).

Produced only in select vintages, this is one of Château Palmer’s most limited cuvées. Guided by Thomas Duroux, it combines Palmer’s aromatic intensity with an unusually supple, early approachability.

This release is limited, offered exclusively to members, and sets the tone for how we’re thinking about drops this year.

Ahead of the drop, we’ll be spending Wine Wednesday going deeper into this cuvée.

I'll be joined by Markus Gladitsch, a sommelier and creative consultant working at the intersection of wine, art, and emerging technologies. With a background in high-end hospitality and fine wine, Markus develops contemporary storytelling formats that translate terroir, craftsmanship, and emotion into visual and digital experiences.

He’s also the creative mind behind the artwork for the Digital Cork of this release. On Wednesday, we’ll talk about the wine itself, the historical reference behind the XIX Century cuvée, and how storytelling and technology can change the way wine is experienced and remembered.
