🍷 Weekly Wine Chronicles
This last week I travelled to 🇬🇪Georgia to soak up and discover over 8000 years of wine history. I visited 7 wineries and tasted over 60 different wines.
Here are some highlights for anyone interested in visiting the cradle of wine:
Must-visit winery: Shumi Winery
Standing at the forefront of Georgian wine production, Shumi Winery was the highlight of my trip. Located in the Tsinandali village in the Kakheti wine region, the winery takes its name from an ancient Georgian term denoting pure, unadulterated wine. With 300 hectares of vineyards scattered across diverse Georgian microzones, Shumi's wines exemplify the Kakhetian style. Their extensive collection of over 400 indigenous grape varieties and dedication to bring out the best of each is astounding.
My suggestion: Call ahead and book a lunch in the vineyards or taste wine in their tree-house overlooking the estate.
Must-visit restaurant: Café Littera
Nestled discreetly in old Tbilisi, behind the venerable Writers' House of Georgia, is a serene garden where Tekuna Gachechiladze pioneers 'new Georgian' cuisine. The menu reinterprets classics; Elarji becomes gooey sulguni cheese croquettes with almond sauce, and beef tartare is enlivened with adjika and pickled bladderwort buds. Pair these with local low-intervention wines and a selection of Georgian brandies (Chacha). It's an absolute oasis where tradition meets contemporary flair, offering an unforgettable gastronomic experience.
Tekuna, by the way, is an incredible host. She greeted us with a huge smile and delivered every dish personally as the night unfolded. As if the place, itself wasn’t already special enough.
Favorite hotel in Tbilisi: Rooms Hotel
Stylish, comfortable and central. Dinner was fabulous and the bar is always buzzing. Highly recommend.
That’s it for this week’s updates! We’d love to hear your take on our this new update format. You can DM us on X or leave a message on Discord — we’d love to hear your thoughts!
