🍇 Wine Wednesday: Spotlight on Germany’s Ahr Region
Yesterday, Dave and I welcomed the incredibly talented winemaker Lukas Sermann from Germany’s Ahr region for a conversation that was as refreshing as his wines. If you’re new to the Ahr, this tiny valley is Germany’s northernmost red wine region—famous for steep, slate-soiled slopes and Pinot Noir that’s lean, lifted, and endlessly expressive.
Lukas shared how he took the reins of his family estate in 2019 and how he’s redefining the region’s style—eschewing heavy-handed techniques in favor of pure, precise Pinot. From cold-soaked fermentations to minimal intervention, he’s crafting some of the Ahr’s most exciting bottles.
Beyond the cellar, we got personal: from flood resilience (those “muddy labels” from 2021 tell their own story) to what it means to make wine that’s rooted in place but speaks to drinkers around the world.
