Penfolds Grange is the undisputed crown jewel of Australian investment-grade wine. Sourced directly from South Australia, this 2017 bottling marks the 70th anniversary of the estate’s flagship wine.
Rare 100% Shiraz Expression: While Grange is typically a blend of Shiraz with a small percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2017 vintage is only the 7th time in 70 years that Grange was bottled as 100% Shiraz.
Multi-District Complexity: True to Penfolds’ philosophy, Grange favors multi-district complexity over single-parcel isolation. Fruit was selected from elite sites across the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale.
Maturation & Longevity: Aged 18 months in 100% new American oak hogsheads. This wine easily possesses a 20- to 40-year aging window.
Ex-Cellar Storage: Transferred directly into temperature-controlled storage at Bordeaux City Bond until you request global delivery.
The Story: The Rebel Winemaker Who Created an Icon 📜
The history of Grange is rooted in pure defiance. In 1950, Penfolds winemaker Max Schubert traveled to Bordeaux and was inspired to create an Australian red built for long-term cellaring.
When he presented his initial experimental 1951 vintage to management and critics, they hated it and ordered him to cease production immediately. Believing fiercely in the wine’s potential, Schubert hid barrels in the cellar and secretly made consecutive vintages (1957, 1958, and 1959). Years later, when the original bottles had aged into a masterpiece, the board reversed its decision—only for Schubert to reveal he had been secretly producing it all along. Grange went on to single-handedly put Australian fine wine on the global collector map.
