This week’s Wine Wednesday broadcast was a true return to form! I tuned in live back home in Germany—enjoying a mineral-driven, dry premier cru Riesling from Franconia’s Innere Leiste vineyard before heading downstairs to host a special birthday dinner at the restaurant—while Annabelle joined from Spain after a weekend tasting coastal whites in Cantabria.
We also celebrated a massive milestone for Annabelle’s winemaking project: while visiting a distributor in San Sebastián, she walked into a local wine bar and found her Bellite listed right alongside Vega Sicilia as a top recommended bottle!
Between sipping a still Txakoli (Rondarabi Zuri and Gros Manseng) on Annabelle’s side and dry German Riesling on mine, we dove into one of the most elusive allocations we’ve ever offered.
The Drop: Château Rayas Châteauneuf-du-Pape Reserve Blanc 2010
To say Château Rayas is iconic is an understatement—it is a true holy grail for fine wine collectors, with older vintages easily commanding thousands at auction. We secured a pristine allocation of 12 single-bottle lots of their 2010 Reserve Blanc.
The Ultimate Rhône Rarity: While Château Rayas is world-famous, their Reserve Blanc is virtually impossible to find. The estate produces just ~400 cases annually from a tiny 2-hectare plot.
Defying Regional Conventions: Forget everything you know about standard Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Rayas has no large heat-radiating pebbles (galettes roulées). Instead, the vines face north on unique, iron-rich red sand and clay soils, secluded inside a dense pine forest.
The 50/50 Blend & Whole-Cluster Vinification: A classic blend of Grenache Blanc and Clairette. The grapes are harvested as intact whole bunches and pressed directly without destemming to limit oxidation, preserving vibrant natural acidity and structural longevity.
16-Year Vibrancy: From the legendary 2010 vintage (considered one of the best since 1990), this 16-year-old white offers beautiful notes of honey, dried herbs, tea, and fennel, with a crisp acidity that allows it to age gracefully for another decade.
Perfect Ex-Château Provenance: Transferred directly from the estate cellars to temperature-controlled storage at Bordeaux City Bond, guaranteeing pristine conditions.
The History: Reclusive Winemaking & Meticulous Heritage 🌲
The estate’s lore is as legendary as its liquid. Founded by Albert Reynaud—who pivoted to winemaking after going deaf at age 45—the chateau built a reputation for fiercely independent thinking. His successor, Louis, famously printed “Premier Grand Cru” on the label simply because he decided it belonged there.
Later, the reclusive Jacques Reynaud became famous for avoiding press and distributors alike, maintaining a dusty, dim cellar and treating each vine like a manicured bonsai tree. Today, his nephew Emmanuel continues this meticulous, low-intervention tradition.
