Troplong Mondot 2016, library releases, and why this one matters.
Yesterday’s Wine Wednesday felt like a proper midweek reset.
A bit of banter, a virtual happy hour, and a deep dive into this week’s drop:
Château Troplong Mondot 2016, Saint-Émilion Premier Grand Cru Classé.
This one has a few things going for it.
First, it’s a library release. That means the winery held back part of the vintage and released it later, once the wine had time to evolve. It’s not something you see often, and it says a lot about how the estate views the wine.
Second, the vintage.
2016 in Bordeaux is widely considered outstanding. Balanced, structured, and built to age, but already showing beautifully.
And then there’s the estate itself.
Troplong Mondot sits on one of the highest points in Saint-Émilion, with a vineyard that combines elevation, slope, and careful vineyard work. The result is a wine that brings together power and control, richness and structure.

More Merlot in the blend.
A softer, more generous texture.
But still plenty of depth and aging potential.
And one of the key signals we always look for: critical consensus.
This wine saw strong scores across multiple critics, which is often where things get interesting. When different palates converge, it usually means the wine is worth paying attention to.
