Wine Wednesday Recap: Breaking Rules, Stolen Glassware, and the “Le Pin of Tuscany” 🇮🇹🍷
A 100-point 100% Merlot icon, a lesson in “Super Tuscan” rebellion, and how an elite Italian painter turned winemaking into his final masterpiece.
This week, we turned our focus to a true icon of Italian winemaking: Petrolo Galatrona. Often dubbed by critics as “The Le Pin of Tuscany” , Galatrona is a wine that completely flips the script on traditional regional winemaking.
If you missed the live broadcast, here is your technical recap of the blockbuster allocation that went live for our members yesterday 👇
The Rebellion: What Makes it a “Super Tuscan”?
When people think of traditional Tuscan wine, they usually think of Sangiovese-dominated blends. But in the 1970s, a few radical, innovative producers shocked the region into a revolution. They began ignoring strict, archaic regional wine laws to plant French Bordeaux varieties instead. Because they broke the rules, their world-class wines were stripped of official “Chianti” status and forced onto the lowest regulatory tier: IGT table wine. Today, that IGT classification is a badge of honor worn by some of the most expensive cult collectibles in Italy.
The Blueprint: Petrolo Galatrona
Galatrona is styled specifically to stand toe-to-toe with the legendary, ultra-rare 100% Merlot right-bank icons of Bordeaux and Tuscany.
The Canvas of an Artist: The estate is run by Luca Sanjust, who was recognized as one of the most promising young fine artists in Italy before walking away from painting to make wine his permanent canvas.
High-Density Terroir: Galatrona comes from a tiny, precise 10-hectare single vineyard plot of low-vigor vines planted in hyper-dense rows. This forces the roots to fiercely compete, producing intensely concentrated berries.
The “One Bottle Per Vine” Yield: Because of these strict organic viticultural practices, yields are incredibly restricted, matching out to roughly one single bottle of wine produced per entire grapevine.
The Allocation Strategy 🚨
With a tiny annual production of only about 30,000 bottles globally , this certified-organic library release went live yesterday in the dVIN app. While elite Right Bank Bordeaux counterparts command thousands on the secondary market , Luca Sanjust’s masterpiece delivers that exact same level of 100-point style while staying firmly within a highly affordable two-digit price range.
