Wine Wednesday Recap: Right Bank Legends & The Midnight Barrel Story 🍷
A 2019 Pomerol classic, Rothschild "gangster" moves, and a June 3rd classifications deep dive.
Yesterday, we shifted our focus to the prestigious Right Bank of Bordeaux. Rodolfo and I explored the undisputed prestige of Château L’Évangile, diving into the technical nuances of Pomerol and the “intellectual” 2019 vintage that has critics talking.
If you missed the livestream, here is the recap of the Pomerol icon we explored and the rare allocation dropping for members later today.
The Icon: Château L’Évangile 2019
Pomerol is a tiny, unassuming neighbor to Saint-Émilion that produces some of the most expensive wines on earth, alongside icons like Petrus and Le Pin. L’Évangile sits among this elite group as one of the region's premier "blue chip" estates.
The Rothschild Standard: Owned by Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite), the estate has benefited from a no-holds-barred commitment of resources to both the vineyards and the winery.
“Midnight Barrels”: A legendary bit of history 👉 when the Rothschilds first took over, they reportedly snuck new oak barrels into the cellar at night to avoid arguments over costs with a minority stakeholder.
Geological Gold: The property features a specific “blue clay” soil—a savory backbone similar to the terroir that made Petrus famous.
The 2019 Vintage: This year is considered a classic. While 2018 was opulent, 2019 offers more finesse and “intellectual” complexity.
Members can secure these rare allocations now and defer delivery, with all wines professionally stored at Bordeaux City Bond.
The Drop: 2019 L’Évangile 🚨
Allocations for this Pomerol blue chip go live today at 1 PM ET.
Drinking Window: Bacchus estimates the peak drinking window between 2025 and 2055.
The Format: Sourced in three-bottle lots at a competitive price point.
The Strategy: Rod’s advice? Grab one three-pack to taste young and another to lay down for the next three decades.
