After last week’s Left Bank Bordeaux deep dive with Jane Anson, Dave & I flipped the map to zoom in on the Right Bank — Saint-Émilion, Pomerol, and the plush Merlot blends that make the region iconic.
And we didn’t stop at soil and cépage… We took it all the way to Pétrus in space (!!) with a fantastic story from Jane Anson. 🪐🍷
It was a proper double feature: a masterclass on Bordeaux’s Right Bank and a look at how wine-backed lending can bring financial flexibility to the industry.
Here’s your pour-over from our conversation:
🍑 Second-Pour Surprise
I brought back the 2020 Château Carbonnieux Blanc from last week — and it held up beautifully after a week in the fridge. Slightly oxidative white peach, and still alive. Dave kept it classic with a 2018 Château Mazaris from Pomerol: 100% Merlot, polished and expressive, grown on iron-rich soils. Right Bank in a glass.
📍From Terroir to Market
We unpacked the Right Bank’s signature styles and structure, the often-confusing Saint-Émilion classification, and the growing appreciation for varietals like Cabernet Franc. These wines might be softer on the palate, but they’re just as strategic in the cellar.
🚀Space-Aged Pétrus
Last week I teased it, but didn’t get the chance to tell it properly — so this time, I came prepared. I re-surfaced a clip from one of our Club dVIN webinars of Jane Anson sharing the unique story of that now-famous bottle of Petrus that orbited Earth for 14 months, before being tasted back on the ground. It’s a unique story that blends tradition, rarity, and a little bit of sci-fi. Had to share 👇
💸Unlocking the Cellar: Wine as a Financial Asset
In the second half, we dug into Dave’s latest article on wine-backed lending — and how the dVIN Protocol makes it all possible.
The idea is simple but powerful: tokenized bottles become verifiable, on-chain assets. That means collectors, merchants, and producers can borrow against their holdings without needing to sell them. No disruption to portfolios, no offloading inventory prematurely.
What makes it work?
– Digital Corks™ provide on-chain proof of authenticity, custody, and condition
– Smart contracts manage loan terms and trigger actions automatically
– Bonded storage + verified custodianship creates a secure collateral base
– And the dVIN Protocol stitches it all together — from tokenization to tracking to lending logic
It’s a game-changing solution for one of the industry’s biggest bottlenecks: capital access.
